Calorem Ltd:

Urban heat network strategy and project development consultancy

We're a small engineering consultancy providing clients with expert support and insight to strategise, plan and develop sustainable, low-to-zero carbon heat networks and help build their accessible knowledge base.

About us:

Calorem Ltd was established by Peter North in January 2019 to assist others in furthering the role of heat networks in sustainable, urban decarbonisation. Peter is a professional engineer with extensive experience in energy project development. Prior to establishing Calorem, Peter worked for the Mayor of London from 2007 where he was involved in establishing decentralised energy programmes to intervene where the market was failing to deliver larger-scale, low-carbon heat network projects. During his time at the Greater London Authority, he worked with policy officers in drafting the energy chapters of the Mayor of London’s Environment Strategy, 2018, and the new London Plan.

Calorem uses geographic information system (GIS) to help clients better present their energy-related data.  This provides the mapping and high-level analytics to inform client decisioning-making and to build their accessible knowledge base.

Context:

Heat networks are an energy carrier; they enable the connection of low cost, low-carbon energy sources to consumers. They are most effective in urban areas of high heat demand. Despite being such a simple concept, a pipe that carries water, the way heat networks operate as part of a system has evolved since their first use in the nineteenth century. Their design is moving away from working at high temperatures towards near-ambient temperature levels. Such a network will be cheaper to install, more efficient in carrying heat, and more effective in incorporating renewable energy sources. They will harvest waste heat to reuse in building heating; urban heat networks are on the cusp of joining the circular economy.

Our advisory services:

Calorem is uniquely experienced in energy project development within both the public and private sectors. Our know-how extends across a broad range of production and supply technologies, and energy sources and fuel-types. Calorem has extensive experience across the energy project development stages from strategy and policy, to planning, development, techno-economics and procurement. We understand the principles of transitional strategies aimed at achieving more sustainable and increasingly lower-carbon large-area heat networks over time. We can lead or support clients with their activities, and combined with the use of GIS, clients will retain an accessible knowledge base to ensure the data, outputs and learning remain readily available for future reference.
